Enforcement of Third Party Motor insurance which commenced nationwide Monday with Police Commissioners in various states direct officers and men to storm the roads with the view to arrest vehicles which do not have valid third party insurance certificates have continued to draw attention of the motoring pubilc.
The third party motor insurance otherwise called the Act only insurance policy is the least of the motor insurance policy which every vehicle owner is required to obtain before putting his car on any Nigerian road. The policy is intended to protect any member of the public from any harm which might result from any vehicle. The enforcement of the Third Party Motor insurance commenced on February 1, 2025. Today is however the first working day of February, a situation which have seen policemen pouring out on various roads in most states of the federation to check the compliance.
It would be recalled that the high commands of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the office of the Inspector General of Police had last week inaugurated a taskforce charged with the responsibility of enforcing compliance of the Third Party Motor which, a policy which insurance companies offer a minimum premium of N15, 000 for a circle of 12 months.
Meanwhile, motorists in Akwa Ibom have continued to decry the enforcement of the Third Party Vehicle Insurance scheme by the state police command which commence February 1, 2025 which led to the impoundment of several vehicles.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, personally led senior officers to strategic locations in Uyo and Ikot Ekpene to ensure compliance with the directive from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, mandating all motorists to present valid third-party insurance certificates starting February 1, 2025.
While Azare expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance, he confirmed that some vehicles were seized after their owners failed to present the necessary documents. He warned that those who fail to provide valid insurance within the given timeframe would face prosecution.
Among the affected motorists was a local government deputy chairman and other prominent individuals. Some motorists, however, expressed frustration, claiming they were unaware that enforcement would begin on Saturday.
One of the offenders, Kingsley Wilson, said, “I didn’t know the police would check papers today. The car belongs to my friend, and I mistakenly brought the wrong documents.”
Despite the complaints, the police insisted that ignorance of the law was not an excuse and urged all vehicle owners to regularize their papers to avoid further sanctions.
